Free Medical Screening Includes:

Location of Medical Screenings:

For those living in Iowa, medical screenings are offered by appointment in Burlington, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa City or Ames.  We can also arrange screenings at other locations in Iowa.

Regular medical screenings are provided by our staff and collaborating medical centers at the Great River Medical Center in Burlington, Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City and McFarland Clinic in Ames. View upcoming screening dates.

Home visits are arranged for homebound former workers.

For those living outside of Iowa, medical screenings are offered at a clinic near you through the nation-wide screening program (called the National Supplemental Screening Program, NSSP).  We will refer you to the NSSP.

Cost of participating:

There is no cost for program enrollment or the medical screening tests.  The medical tests are provided to you free of charge. The funding from the U.S. Department of Energy Former Worker Medical Screening Program pays for all costs associated with the medical screening tests.  Any follow-up medical care will be the responsibility of the participant and/or his/her insurance carrier.  Participation in this program is voluntary.

Benefits of participating:

Occupational medicine doctors recommend that all BAECP former workers consider receiving this free medical screening.

The purpose of the medical screening is to detect work-related illness(es) as early as possible.  Early detection can and does save lives.

One unique screening test offered is the BeLPT, which is not commonly offered during routine physical examinations.  The BeLPT is offered to you for free through the FWP medical screening.

The program has several benefits including the chance to:

Who will get the results of the medical screening?  How private are these results?

Former workers will get their results in the mail within 2 weeks to 3 months after their exam.

If there are any abnormal results, we will contact you as soon as we receive the abnormal result.  We will also provide recommendations for follow-up medical care, which may include additional tests or exams.  Your personal doctor may do the follow-up evaluation or we can help you find a doctor.  The FWP does not pay for follow-up testing.

Your participation in this program will be considered confidential to the extent permitted by law.  Your questionnaire responses will be used only by the BAECP-FWP staff for health risk assessment purposes.  If any medical screening results are published, no information that could personally identify any individuals will be included.

What about secrecy or classified information?

No one will be asked to give any classified information.  Former workers should not answer any questions that they are concerned about.

How can I get my medical records?

Although the BAECP-FWP’s office is at The University of Iowa, our project does not automatically have access to your medical records at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  You must request a copy of your medical records and forward copies to us.  Please retain a copy of your records.
