EHSRC Role(s): Oxidative Stress and Metabolism; Environmental Disease and Population Research

Dr. Bao has a broad background in biology, medicine, nutrition, and epidemiology. His early work for the first time identified circulating heme oxygenase-1 as a promising novel biomarker for type 2 diabetes. As a postdoctoral fellow at the NIH/NICHD, Dr. Bao learned the importance of intrauterine environment on child health and human development. There he extended his research to investigate gestational diabetes and its life-course health implications in both the mothers and their children. He served as a co-principle investigator of an NIH-funded research project on supplemental iron, gestational diabetes, and offspring growth and was also the NICHD primary point-of-contact on biospecimen issues of the NIH-funded Diabetes & Women's Health Study (www.dwhstudy.org). In addition, he assisted in designing and implementing a nested case-control study regarding etiological biomarkers of gestational diabetes in the NICHD Fetal Growth Study. Recently, he has been devoting efforts to establishing a maternal and child health cohort to investigate the impact of maternal exposures during pregnancy on short- and long-term outcomes in the mothers and their children.
