College Celebrates 10th Anniversary
The college marked its 10th anniversary by hosting a number of activities throughout the academic year, including a special celebration in June at the Kinnick Stadium press box.

Three New Department Heads Appointed in the College
The College of Public Health welcomed three new department heads this summer: Keith Mueller, Health Management and Policy; Edith Parker, Community and Behavioral Health; and Peter Thorne, Occupational and Environmental Health.

Outstanding Alumni Honored Four College of Public Health alumni were honored with awards this spring. Richard Knapp (HMP '65, '68) received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Iowa Alumni Association. Laura Beane Freeman (Epi ’99, ’03; pictured at left), Christina Freese-Decker (HMP '02), and Frank Lisella (OEH ’70; pictured at left) were recognized with the College of Public Health Outstanding Alumni Award.

Plan Now for UI Homecoming Game, CPH Tailgate The college is pleased to offer CPH alumni access to an allotment of 50 tickets for the Homecoming football game on Oct. 2. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Before the game, alumni are invited to the CPH Tailgate.

New College Public Health Academic Building Taking Shape
Anticipation is building as the structure that will be the College of Public Health’s first academic home is taking shape on campus. The new facility, incorporating “green” building technology, will provide classrooms, faculty offices, and a gathering place for the public health community. Substantial completion is expected for fall 2011.

Building Today for a Healthy Tomorrow, the college's ongoing $15 million capital campaign, is focused on financing the new building and providing funds for student and faculty support and other programmatic development. Recent major gifts by several CPH alumni will help to advance the college and position it for further growth and development.

Iowa Summer Institute in Biostatistics Hosts 15 Students
This summer, a group of students from all over the nation took part in the Iowa Summer Institute in Biostatistics, a seven-week program designed to provide undergraduates with biostatistical training and applied research opportunities.

CEPH Re-accreditation Process Underway; Comments Invited
The College of Public Health is undergoing re-accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), an independent agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit schools of public health. As part of the re-accreditation process, the college completed and submitted a preliminary self-study to CEPH on May 4, 2010, that addressed all accreditation criteria. Public comment on the self-study is now invited.

| New Center Focuses on Rural Health Policy Analysis
The Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI) Center for Rural Health Policy Analysis joined the College of Public Health in May 2010 along with its director, Keith Mueller, the Gerhard Hartman Professor and head of health management and policy. The center conducts original research in the topical areas of access to health care services, Medicare policies, development of rural delivery systems (including effects of national policy), and public health

The University of Iowa Center on Aging will launch a two-year study funded by TIAA-CREF to assess trends and best practices in comprehensive retirement planning at institutions of higher education in the United States.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has awarded the University of Iowa Superfund Research Program a five-year, $16 million grant to study the health effects of environmental pollutants, especially polychlorinated biphenyls found in water, former industrial sites and the atmosphere.

Researchers with the University of Iowa Prevention Research Center for Rural Health have received a five-year, $4.7 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to improve the health of rural communities in Iowa and the Midwest. The center conducts community-based research on nutrition, physical activity and aging.

Iowa Work-Related Injury Deaths Lowest Since 2001
In 2009, 65 people in Iowa died from traumatic injuries while working -- the lowest number of work-related deaths since 2001 and 25 fewer deaths than 2008, according to the Iowa Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (IA FACE) program based in the University of Iowa College of Public Health.

Radio Dramas Aimed at Reducing Unintended Pregnancies in Iowa
Public health researchers hope that listeners who tune into radio dramas will take away lessons in preventing unintended pregnancies. As part of the Iowa Initiative to Reduce Unintended Pregnancies, researchers in the University of Iowa College of Public Health, the University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Alabama are producing Spanish-language radio dramas, often called "radionovelas," for Latino audiences across Iowa.

| Study Finds Abortion, Intimate Partner Violence Link
A CPH study found more than one out of 10 women who had elective abortions in Iowa were physically or sexually assaulted by an intimate partner in the past year. The report was led by Audrey Saftlas, professor of epidemiology.

A recent study found an association between higher HDL cholesterol levels and the lower rate of cancer. "Since low HDL appears to be a marker for chronic disease risk, this is just another reason why we need to emphasize improved lifestyle among these patients," wrote Jennifer Robinson, professor of epidemiology, in her response piece.
Read more… The Nose Has it: Larger Noses Inhale Fewer Pollutants
College of Public Health researchers found larger noses inhale almost 7 percent fewer pollutants than smaller ones, and also act as a barrier to deflect germs away from the mouth. The research, led by Renee Anthony, assistant professor of occupational and environmental health, involved the creation of two artificial noses, one of which was 2.3 times larger than the other.

A government panel of experts, chaired by Robert Wallace, professor of epidemiology, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) isn't equipped to handle problems with the food supply and is in need of a major revamping. "The time has come to modernize the FDA's food safety program focusing on the development of an integrated, risk-based system," Wallace said.

Cancer has surpassed heart disease as the leading cause of death in Iowa, according to a report released March 24 by the State Health Registry of Iowa. Charles Lynch, medical director of the Registry and professor of epidemiology, said this was the first time in 36 years of surveillance that more Iowans died of cancer, using age-adjusted rates.

Thanks to everyone who filled out the College of Public Health alumni survey. Your responses will help us to evaluate and improve our existing programs, services, and communications. Alumni input is especially critical at this time as the College prepares for re-accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). | Elementary Education: Students Lead Public Health Outreach Program
The public health field is varied and sometimes unfamiliar to adults, not to mention children, but a new educational outreach program led by College of Public Health student leaders aims to educate elementary-aged kids about the benefits of public health in their schools and at home.

In honor of Earth Month, ECO Hawk (Easy Change Overall), a student group led by College of Public Health students, sponsored the Green D.R.E.A.M. Expo and Waste Audit on April 16. Teams of volunteers wearing protective gear examined the composition of the college's waste stream to provide baseline data needed to plan future recycling and waste-reduction efforts.

Several CPH faculty, students, and staff traveled to the State Capitol in Des Moines on March 23 to meet with elected officials as part of an early celebration of National Public Health Week. The collegiate contingent, led by Dean Sue Curry, thanked legislative leaders for their support and offered informal updates on a variety of collegiate developments.
