Manure Pit Gas Awareness

In the Midwest, an estimated 24% of swine barn manure pits have experienced “foaming”, which can trap high concentrations of methane gas resulting in hazardous environments.  These high concentrations can cause flash fires or explosions if there is an ignition source. Since 2009, at least 11 explosions have occurred in upper Midwest barns from methane releases in foaming manure.  See Foaming Manure Pit Dangers Fact Sheet

Avian Influenza Outbreak

Since December 2014, over 47 million birds in the US have been affected by the avian influenza outbreak. GPCAH, in collaboration with its partners, has produced a resource outlining personal protective equipment (PPE) recommendations for workers in poultry facilities.  See Avian Influenza PPE Guidelines.
